Taking good care of your most important business asset
I use two computers one for the office and one for working remotely, meeting customers and delivering training so MAC Book Pro maintenance is vital for delivering services.
For the last few days I have seen an increase in issues with my my trusted possession so I will be carrying out some maintenance so I though I would share some my maintenance tips and advice.
1- Back up Mac Book Pro regularly
Back up you Mac Book Pro to a remote hard drive. This will free up space and keep the computer working to its optimal capacity.
The Built in Time Machine is ideal
2 - Review and delete unwanted applications
Open Finder and review the Apps in the Applications Folder.
I was amazed by how many additional applications my poor Mac was having to manage.
I have been using MAMP for a Siverstripe website upgrade but have decided to stick with WordPress for this project so MAMP has to go.
For security I am using Norton for all my devices but this seems to be working fine but check your security apps are working effectively and not disrupting the Macs performance.
Get rid of old files and images and have a general declutter by moving some files to an external hard drive for manual file and storage.
3 - Free up disk space - delete the cache
Your computer stores memories so these memories can be removed and restored.
Select Finder > Go > Go to to folder > ~/library/caches
delete folders taking up disk space. You do not need to delete all files in here just the ones taking the most space.
Also delete from
/library/caches
4 - Run Disk Utility
It is worth running this procedure regularly as part of your maintenance plan.
Applications > Diskutility.app
Select > First Aid
select > Repair disk permissions
5 - Repair Disk
First Aid > Verify Disk
Disk Utility will clean up any repairs.
6 - Clean up desktop of lots of junk
I tend to be a bit lazy and stick a lot of images and files on my desktop. This infact is bad practice as you must keep the desktop free of clutter.
Move all images and files into the correct locations or delete them.
7 - Keep MAC Book Pro and applications up to date
This is true will all hardware and software. Updates could include vital security updates or minor issues so all updates should be carried out as soon as they appear.
